Astrophysics is dedicated to the study of the physical processes that govern the universe and the objects it contains. Astrophysics is therefore a transverse field of research rather than a single discipline, whose scope is extremely broad. By the considerable range of physical conditions found in the Universe (density, temperature , etc.), all areas of physics are needed to some extent, from the infinitely small to the infinitely large, from dense to tenuous environments, from collisional to collisionless environments, etc. Furthermore, in order to extract the maximum information from the signal received by our detectors of all kinds, all approaches must be combined : observations, numerical modeling, theory, and laboratory experiments.
Université Joseph Fourier offers several teaching units accessible from the Bachelor of Physics and the first year of the Master of Physics. The Master 2 « A2P » then proposes a specialization in astrophysics and planetary science. These lectures provide all the required background to seriously consider a PhD in any field of research of modern astrophysics, from the primordial Universe to the formation of planetary systems, through the physics and chemistry of the interstellar and intergalactic media.
