The link between high column density gas and protostars in the diverse environments of Orion

Understanding how the gas structure within molecular clouds is linked to the star formation content and properties of the nascent protostars within is a key step towards understanding the physical factors that control star formation. We report on analysis of the connection between molecular cloud environment and protostellar properties in Orion, the largest high- and low-mass star-forming cloud complex within 500 pc of the Sun. On the large scales, the Herschel Gould Belt observations allow for a determination of the column densities (and temperatures) in the dense gas surrounding the Orion protostars. On the smaller scales, the Herschel Orion Protostar Survey (HOPS), in combination with other surveys, has produced well sampled 1 um to 870 um SEDs for over 320 protostars in Orion. Based on these data, we link the protostellar incidence and properties with their environmental gas properties as reflected by the column density distributions. Furthermore, we discuss recent CARMA observations of the youngest protostars, the PACS Bright Red Sources, and their aparent environmental dependence. Our results indicate a strong link between the molecular cloud column density distribution and the protostellar content ; we detect a relative deficit in high column density gas as the protostellar population ages from Class 0 to Class I sources.
